Liposuction of the Neck

The procedure for liposuction in the neck area, is to remove fat from underneath the chin. It is used to reduce the look of a double chin. Most of the time this is done on an out-patient basis, but it depends on your health and the amount of fat there is to remove, you may have to stay in the hospital a couple of days.

Before your surgery, the doctor will mark the area where the fat is going to be removed. You will then be given an IV in your arm to make sure the fluid levels in your body stay at a healthy level during the surgery. Liposuction in the neck is preformed with a narrow tube called a cannula that is connected to a vacuum. The doctor will make a tiny incision under the chin or behind the ear lobes. The cannula is then inserted and is used to break up the fat and sculpt the neck area. The high pressure vacuum sucks out the unwanted fat. The surgery normal takes about an hour and is done under a local anesthetic. The pain during the operations is usually minimal, but you may feel pressure, movement or a vibrating sensation.

The type of people who would benefit from this procedure are ones that have fat pockets that are resistant to diet and exercise, have firm, elastic skin, do not fluctuate in their weight, have had no other surgeries in that area, are psychologically stable and ones that do not smoke.

Liposuction is a commonly performed surgery, but with all surgeries there are risks. Some of those risks are dimpling, lumpiness, scarring, discoloration and sagging skin. More serious complications include blood clots, infection, excessive fluid loss and fluid build-up in the lungs. To reduce some of the risks, it is important that you follow the doctor’s instruction, before and after surgery.

This type of procedure is not easy for most people to recover from. Immediately after the surgery you will have to wear a support garment for one to three weeks to make sure your neck stays firmly shaped. Also you may suffer from a sore neck, burning, swelling, numbness, crusting, bruising and bleeding. To relive the discomfort you may want to ask your doctor to prescribe medication. If you have stitches they will be removed in one week to ten days. Within two to three weeks the side effects should subside and you should see visible results from your surgery. It may take up to six months to a year to see the full effect, depending on how much fat was removed.

If you are considering having neck liposuction, it’s best to do as much research as you possible can on finding the right doctor for your procedure. Once you have found the right doctor, talk to him about any concerns you might have, so you will be completely happy with the results.
